How to Fix Accidentally Using Your Password as Your Name
Last updated: April 16, 2026
Available on: Mac, Windows, iOS, Android
If your password is showing up in emails from Wispr Flow, in your referral link, or as your display name — you likely entered it in the name field during signup. This guide helps you secure your account and fix the issue in under 5 minutes.
Quick checks
Did you sign up with Google, Apple, or SSO? If so, your password was not entered during signup and is not exposed — this issue only affects email-based registration.
Is your password actually visible? Go to Settings → Referrals and look for your password in the referral URL. If it's not there, you may only need to update your display name in Step 2 below.
How this happens
During email-based registration on mobile, if you enter your password into the name field, it gets saved as your display name. This can cause your password to appear in:
Emails: Greetings like "Hi [your password]"
Referral link: Your referral code is generated from the first 10 alphabetic characters of your first name, uppercased, with a number appended
Display name: Anywhere your name appears in the app
On iOS, the signup form shows the password field before the name field, while Android shows the name field first. This difference in field order can cause password manager autofill to place your password in the wrong field. Desktop sign-in uses Google/Apple authentication, so this issue is less common on Mac or Windows.
Note: This is a data entry issue, not a security vulnerability with Wispr Flow. Your password is still securely stored and your account is protected.
How to fix this
Step 1: Update your password immediately
Since your original password may have been exposed, create a new secure password right away.
iOS
Open the Wispr Flow app and sign out.
Enter your email address and tap Continue.
Tap "Forgot password?" on the password screen.
Complete the hCaptcha challenge, then submit to receive a password reset email.
Check your inbox for the reset email. If you don't see it, check your spam folder.
Once you set a new password and sign back in, the reset is complete.
Android
Open the Wispr Flow app and sign out.
Enter your email address and tap Continue.
Tap "Forgot password?" on the password screen.
Tap "Send reset link" to receive a password reset email.
Check your inbox for the reset email. If you don't see it, check your spam folder.
Once you set a new password and sign back in, the reset is complete.
Mac and Windows
Open the Wispr Flow app and click "Sign in via browser."
Click "Forgot password?" on the browser login page to request a password reset email.
Check your inbox for the reset email. If you don't see it, check your spam folder.
Once you set a new password and sign back in, the reset is complete.
Note: This flow is only available if you signed up with email and password. If you signed up with Google, Apple, Microsoft, or SSO, your Wispr Flow password was not compromised — reset your password with that provider instead if needed.
Warning: After resetting your password, all existing sessions are signed out across all devices. You need to sign in again with your new password. If you use the same password on other websites or apps, change those passwords as well.
Step 2: Update your display name
Now that your password is secure, update your name so it displays correctly in emails and throughout the app.
iOS: Go to Account and tap your profile to edit your first and last name.
Android: Tap the profile card at the top of the Account screen.
Mac and Windows: Go to Settings → Account. If your name looks like a password, you see the message "This looks like a password, not a name" and the Save button is disabled — enter a valid name to continue.
Your updated name appears in emails and throughout the app after saving.
Step 3: Regenerate your referral code
If your referral code contains your password, regenerate it directly from the app.
Tip: Update your display name (Step 2) before regenerating your referral code, since the new code is based on your current name.
Update Wispr Flow to version 1.4.847 or later.
Open the app and go to Refer a friend.
Tap the ↻ button next to Your invite link to generate a new referral code.
Your new referral link appears immediately. The old link no longer contains your password.
Note: Wispr Flow now checks your name when you save your profile on Mac and Windows — if it detects a password-like value, it shows an error and prevents saving. The Android app also warns you if your password matches your name. These checks help prevent this issue going forward.
FAQs
Can I just change my display name without regenerating my referral code?
Yes. Changing your display name fixes how your name appears in emails and the app. However, if your password is visible in your referral link, you should also regenerate your referral code using the ↻ button in the Refer a friend section (requires version 1.4.847 or later).
Will regenerating my referral code affect my past referrals?
No. Your past referrals and any credits earned are not affected. Only your referral link changes going forward.
