Set up the Flow keyboard on iPhone

Last updated: April 30, 2026

Available on: iOS

Add Wispr Flow as a keyboard on your iPhone to dictate directly into Messages, Mail, Slack, and any other app with a text field. Setup takes under a minute.

How to set it up

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap General → Keyboard → Keyboards.

  3. Tap Add New Keyboard and select Wispr Flow.

  4. Tap Wispr Flow from the keyboard list, then enable Allow Full Access and tap Allow in the popup.

  5. Verify it works: open any app with a text field, tap and hold the globe icon on the keyboard, select Wispr Flow, then tap the microphone button and dictate a short phrase. If text appears, you're all set.

Note: Full Access is required for Flow to process your speech and deliver transcriptions. Audio is handled securely and is not stored. The first time you start a recording, iOS will also ask for microphone permission — tap Allow to grant access.

Common issues

Flow Keyboard drains battery very quickly

This was caused by a background process running inside the keyboard extension that pushed battery usage to around 40% per hour. It has been fixed — after updating, battery usage from the Flow Keyboard drops to approximately 5% per hour.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to the latest version from the App Store.

  2. Restart your iPhone after updating to ensure the fix takes effect.

FAQs

Why does Flow need Full Access?

Full Access allows the keyboard to send your audio to Wispr's servers for transcription. Without it, the keyboard cannot process speech.

How do I switch to the Flow Keyboard while typing?

Tap and hold the globe icon on any keyboard, then select Wispr Flow from the list.

Can I use the Flow Keyboard in any app?

Yes. The Flow Keyboard works in any app that uses standard iOS text input — Messages, Mail, Notes, Slack, and more. Some apps with custom text fields (like certain banking apps) may not support third-party keyboards.

How do I remove the Flow Keyboard?

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards, swipe left on Wispr Flow, and tap Delete.

The microphone button does nothing when I tap it

Microphone permission likely hasn't been granted or was revoked. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable the toggle next to Wispr Flow. If Wispr Flow doesn't appear in the list, tap the microphone button in the Flow Keyboard once — this triggers the permission prompt and makes the app appear.

I see an error message when I try to dictate

Flow displays a message at the top of the screen when dictation can't complete. Here's what each message means and how to fix it:

  • "Oops, we didn't hear you.. Get closer to your mic!" — Flow didn't pick up any audio. Move your iPhone closer to your mouth and try again.

  • "Poor connection! Tap the mic to try again" — Dictation failed due to a network issue. Check your Wi-Fi or mobile data, then tap the microphone to retry.

  • "Your mic is being used by another app. Close other apps and try again!" — Another app is currently using your microphone. Close other open apps, then tap the microphone again.

  • "Enable microphone access to use Flow" — Microphone permission is not granted. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable the toggle next to Wispr Flow.

  • "Oops, something went wrong.. Tap the mic to try again!" — An unexpected error occurred. Tap the microphone button to try again.

I see a screen that says "Swipe back to your app"

On iOS 26.4 and later, activating the microphone from the Flow Keyboard may take you to the Wispr Flow app. Swipe right on the bottom bar to return to your previous app — the microphone will activate and you can start dictating.

I don't see Keyboards or Microphone in Settings

Force close Settings and reopen it. The option should appear once the app has fully refreshed.
